It all started in 1993. Johnnie Candle finished up his marketing degree from the University of Akron and decided he’d have one more summer helping his dad on his charter boat on Lake Erie. That summer passed and Candle had no job. So, like any young graduate, he took what he could get. A straight commission gig and he made nada, zippo, no money. Yep, what was a young man to do? Become a professional angler of course! Clearly the only logical choice.
In walleye country, rivers hold an abundance of fish. Current adds another dimension to angling, which can be a challenge, but it often concentrates walleye in specific areas.
Each winter, thousands of anglers make their way to Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota for exceptional walleye fishing through the ice. This 132,516-acre lake reaches 42 feet in depth, with many gravel bars and rock humps on the southern end of the lake.

Weeds hold walleyes all summer long but aquatic vegetation can become even more appealing in the fall when water temperatures drop. While many productive patterns can emerge, what can be so appealing about weed fish come fall is that there is often a level of stability.
This time of year, the lakes are typically full of natural bait, like bugs, minnows and larvae. With an abundance of food, it is easy for walleyes to become lazy when looking for a meal. As a result, we often have to provoke a bite by being aggressive with our fishing presentation.
