Well with the right load and range limit of 150 yards (which seems to be the agreed upon effective range for .223 Rem ) an AR-15 pattern rifle/carbine with either a 55 grain soft point, 62 grain soft point or hollow point bullet can be used to take a white tailed deer.

I am looking to purchase the T/C Compass and I would like it to be chambered in a cartridge that can handle both Deer and Elk.

I continue to read that the 308 is one of the most versatile cartridges on the market but I have friends who also tell me that I should choose a rifle that can handle ranges from 200 - 800.

From what I have been able to find the 308 tends to struggle out past 600. This is not to say it cannot be a 1000 yard cartridge but there might be a more versatile option like the 300 Win Mag.

Or should I be looking to purchase both the 308 and the 300 Win Mag as that would cover all my bases for North American game.

The article has some useful insights and the chart is almost right for small games I never went for big games as I'm new to hunting however I have a collection of survival gears for both big and small games through my outdoor survival subscription box sadly rifles are not the part of subscription.
