Fly fishing with a spinning rod?

Forums
EDIT: Stupidity solved(Temporarily).

I know about bubble floats, but I've got a different idea.

With a fly rod, the line is the weight. Couldn't I use pure braid backing for casting power?

The second problem one might encounter is the cast, but I have a 9'6", moderate fast action, Steelhead rod. I feel like it could get a good whipping action and the height definitely helps... In some instances.

Any thoughts, advice, and even jokes would be appreciated.

if you don't want to use a casting bubble you could try a shooting head. Fly fishers use shooting heads mostly for sinking lines but you can find floating shooting heads also. It's a weighted section between the running line and leader. It's like a coated cable with loops at both ends. It should add enough weight to load a spinning rod? It would probably work better on a medium action rod than a fast action? It would be interesting to experiment with. It think it wouldn't work as well on spinning gear as a fly rod because the rods load differently but why not give it a try?

With that said, I would encourage you to come to the dark side and just buy a fly rod.

Any rod that will load a fly line could function as a fly rod, but fly rods are going to give you a better cast. I think your correct about the backing or braid... not enough weight there to load a rod. I show many of our guests how to rig up a fly and bubble if they aren't confident with the fly rod. Good Luck

$5 Tenkara rod! Thats a score!

Basspro has some dog wood fly rods for around $60 and pre loaded fly reels for $60 and two piece combos for $99. The line is cheap but you could use it for a while and replace it with some thing like RIO later. Personally I would save up and get something better. Basspro has an Orvis combo for $169 that is really sweet and it has a 25 year warranty. You might check and see if there are any fly fishing clubs in your area. Our local club has club equipment you can check out like a library. We also have an annual swap meet where you will find awesome deals. Glad to hear you figured out some thing and had some success.
